May is a month with long weekends. Let's see how many days off await us in 2022, and how they can be spent with maximum benefit. Let us turn to the order of the Government of the Russian Federation dated July 10, 2019 No. 875 “On postponing holidays in 2020.”
The main date of May is Victory Day
In accordance with this decree, the following weekends are postponed to May from January:
- from Saturday 4 January to Monday 4 May;
- from Sunday 5 January to Tuesday 5 May.
May in numbers
There are a total of 31 calendar days in May 2022, of which 17 are working days and 14 are weekends.
During May, current employees of private and public institutions must work:
- 135 hours with a forty-hour work week;
- 121.4 hours with a thirty-six hour work week;
- 85.6 hours for a 24-hour work week.
The May calendar of working days and weekends in 2022 looks like this:
Thus, on the May holidays, Russians will have a weekend from May 1 to 5, in honor of the Spring and Labor Festival, and from May 9 to 11 in connection with the celebration of Victory Day. Large-scale events are expected in 2022 in connection with the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In honor of this anniversary, 2022 has been declared the Year of Remembrance and Glory.

Between these blocks of holiday weekends there are only 3 working days - May 6, 7 and 8, for which you can take a vacation and have the opportunity to relax for 11 days in a row. Some may devote this period to home rest, spring gardening work, relaxing with friends in nature, while others may travel to other cities and countries.
What the calendar shows
The production calendar for the month of May, where all transfers and holidays are already noted, will help you figure out the work and rest schedule:
- weekends and non-working days are highlighted in green;
- You can tell which working days are in May by the white color.
There are 31 days in a month, of which 18 are working days and 13 are non-working days.
Let's go out into nature
The first foliage, the first grass, the sun, which does not fry, but gently warms - the right time to go out of town. It's a busy sowing season for summer residents, and they spend their weekends in their garden plots.
But, despite the opening of the summer season, you can choose a time and take a walk through the nearby forest. Trees relieve the stress of everyday work, fill you with energy, and restore strength. Our ancestors knew about their healing properties and during illness they advised to cling to the trunk. If you don’t want to wander aimlessly through the forest, you can start collecting medicinal herbs. May is the time to collect:
- Nettles
- Yarrow
- Strawberry leaves
- plantains
- Coltsfoot
- Spring primrose
Refrain from lighting a fire in the forest, and it is better to cook barbecue in a specially equipped place. In April-May, the “Fire Safety Rules in Forests”, approved by Government Decree No. 417 of June 30, 2007, are already in effect.
How to pay for non-working days from May 4 to May 7 using different payment systems
Important! The Ministry of Labor in clarifications dated March 26, 2020 “Recommendations to employees and employers in connection with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of March 25, 2022 No. 206 in paragraph 3 indicated: “A non-working day does not apply to weekends or non-working holidays, therefore payment is made as usual , and not in an increased size." |
In this regard, it is assumed that it is legal to make payments according to the following principles:
- employees on the salary system will receive the same amount as always, since on these days (from May 4 to May 7), wages, in accordance with the Presidential Decree, remain unchanged;
- with a wage system based on hourly tariff rates, payment is made (if the employee is hired to work on these days) in the single amount of the hourly tariff rate. If an employee does not work on May 1-10 during Putin’s weekend, no payment is made;
- under the piecework system - if the employee is not involved in work on that day, payment is made in accordance with the local regulations of the employer (for non-working days the appropriate remuneration is paid), work on these days is paid at the same rate as piecework rates.
We remind you Commenting on the last two points, we adhered to the Recommendations of the Ministry of Labor dated March 26, 2020. Read more about the application of these Recommendations here. |
Based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Labor, one more conclusion can be drawn - what is the difference between employees working these days and those who will rest - different principles for calculating average earnings :
- when determining the average wage, non-working days from May 4 to May 7, 2022 and retained wages for this period are not taken into account (according to subparagraph “e” of paragraph 5 of the Regulation on the specifics of the procedure for calculating the average wage, approved by Government Resolution No. 2412.2007 922), this norm applies to those employees who were released from work in accordance with the Decree;
- if the employee was not released from work during the period of the Decree and his work time sheet indicates working days, then this period and the amounts of payments for it are taken into account when calculating average earnings.
There are no more differences - whether the employee works on these days (from 4 to 7) or rests - their salary for these days will be the same!
Let's stay at home
Don't despair if circumstances force you to stay in the city. Local authorities are preparing an extensive holiday program. Various festivals, thematic master classes, concerts, interactive shows and many other exciting events.
Weather permitting, street cafes open for May Day. You can get together with a small group and have an inexpensive snack while basking in the rays of the spring sun. Or you can go to the city park. On holidays it can be crowded, but there are attractions and festivities.
Do I need to cancel my vacation if it falls on the days from May 4 to May 7, 2021?
A note for personnel officers: there is no need to extend vacation if it includes days that the President declared non-working, since they are neither holidays nor weekends.
Important! In accordance with Art. 120 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, only non-working holidays, if they fall during the annual main or additional paid leave, are not included in the number of calendar days of leave. |
However, taking into account the fact that this situation is unplanned and may worsen the employee’s right to leave, the employer, by agreement with the employee, has the right to postpone this leave from May 1 to May 10 to another date.
On a tour of Russia
There are many options for traveling around the country:
- To Moscow, for events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
- To St. Petersburg, where the festive events of the Year of Memory and Glory will also take place.
- To Karelia, to beautiful nature.
- Along the Golden Ring.
- To the Black Sea - to Sochi or Crimea.
- In Bashkiria and other parts of Russia.
Go on a trip with a group on a comfortable bus, or book a hotel and get there yourself. The level of domestic tourism is increasing every year, and there is a lot to see in Russia.
How to extend your vacation using holidays
The Labor Code requires you to take a break once a year 14 Labor Code of the Russian Federation, Article 125. Dividing annual paid leave into parts. Review from vacation days in a row. The remaining days can be taken as you wish, of course, by notifying the employer about this.
Thus, vacation on January 9 and 10 can extend the eight-day New Year holidays to 12 days. Three days in May - the 6th, 7th and 8th - will also combine the weekend into a 12-day holiday. In addition, vacation can be “stuck” before a three-day weekend in February, March or after - in June. This will allow you to go to work a day later or leave it a day earlier.
Abroad
If you managed to combine two blocks of holidays into a long period, taking time off or vacation for three inter-holiday days, you have as many as 11 days at your disposal for a full-fledged trip. Consider options:
- Armenia. Every corner of the country has a fascinating history and majestic nature; you will find places of power there and meet wonderful people. Choose any direction - you won’t regret it. Tatev, Khndzoresk, Noravank, Echmiadzin, Sevan and many other monasteries and natural sites of the country will make an indelible impression.
- Israel. Warm weather sets in on the holy land in early May. The average air temperature is about +25 degrees, and the water of the Dead Sea warms up to +20. Unspoiled by the hot climate, Russians dare to swim. You won’t be able to see all of Israel in a short period of time; it’s better to wander around the sights of one or two cities.
- Hungary. Tourists finally appreciated the country, and a stream of tourists poured in. It is better to go to Budapest for 3-4 days. You will admire ancient castles and Catholic cathedrals, cross the Danube on a chain bridge (it connects two cities - Buda and Pest, which merged into one), visit the Hungarian National Gallery.
The weekend will fly by quickly, but you will be able to gain impressions and gain strength for further work.
Who postpones the weekend and why?
In Russia, the Labor Code of the Russian Federation is established, article 112. Non-working holidays 14 non-working holidays:
- January 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 — New Year holidays;
- January 7—Christmas;
- February 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day;
- March 8—International Women's Day;
- May 1 - Spring and Labor Day;
- May 9 - Victory Day;
- June 12—Russia Day;
- November 4 is National Unity Day.
According to the law, if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the day off from that day is transferred to the next working day. An exception is made for New Year and Christmas holidays. The government of the Russian Federation distributes weekends from these days at its discretion.
In addition, sometimes it can make some Saturdays work and at their expense lengthen the time of holiday rest. But in 2022, we managed to avoid such casualties.
Typically, rest days fill the awkward gaps between holidays and weekends. For example, if May 9 is Thursday, it is logical to make Friday May 10 a day off so that Russians can plan a trip to their dacha or an extraordinary vacation for four days.
Legislative basis
The official list of holidays in Russia is defined in the Labor Code. They are non-workers; citizens can be involved in work activities only with their consent and in exceptional cases. Weekends are provided depending on the work schedule established at the enterprise; traditionally these are Saturday and Sunday. Holidays in May 2022 in Russia are 1 and 9. On these dates, the Spring and Labor Festival and the next anniversary of the Victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War are celebrated.
How many public holidays are there in May 2022? The answer is obvious: two. But how long citizens will rest and when exactly needs to be sorted out separately. In accordance with the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, if a holiday falls on a weekend, the official statutory holiday must be transferred to the next non-working day after the holiday. So, if a holiday falls on Saturday, which itself is officially a non-working day, then a well-deserved rest will await workers on Monday.
What to do during the May holidays
If you are not planning to go on a long trip, think about a short hike - this way you will combine the tradition of holiday Maydays with useful physical activity. All you need is to go to the picnic site not by car, but on foot. If the weather permits, stop in nature for the night - listen to the singing of cicadas, admire the stars, sit by the fire. The main thing is to remember the basic safety rules and about insects: in May, especially near the water, it will be difficult without repellents.
Many Russians, following a Soviet habit, devote one of the May days to a big spring cleaning. Cleaning up your home before the summer season is a great idea. Yes, and the therapeutic role of cleaning also takes place - by cleaning the apartment and getting rid of old things, you also get rid of negative thoughts and the burden of past problems.
